We counted every in-stock dress we index this week: 81,438 of them, from 98 stores. 1,754 meet a tznius standard as they come, with sleeves to the elbow, a covered neckline, a hem below the knee and nothing sheer or slit. Another 4,211 pass every one of those tests except the sleeves.

Those are the ones most people scroll past, and there are more than twice as many of them. Add a shell, a cardigan or a bolero and you've more than tripled what you can buy.

The stores nobody checks

Some of the best of these dresses come from stores a modest shopper would never think to open. Reformation has 5 covered dresses by our count, and 56 that only need sleeves. Red Dress has 2 and 67. Bohme has 4 and 68. Faithfull the Brand has none at all, and still a dozen that work with a shell.

That's the upside of shopping this way. These are racks other modest shoppers skip, so you're far less likely to see your dress on someone else at the next simcha. Bloomingdale's (946) and ASOS (615) still have the most by count, and the median price is $178, a little under the $191 median for dresses that are covered as they come.

Shell, cardigan or bolero

What to know
A shell goes under the dress. It's the neatest fix for a sleeveless dress with a high neckline, because it only adds sleeves. Match it to the dress so it reads as one outfit.
A cardigan works over casual dresses and short sleeves, and it's the easy choice once the weather turns.
A bolero or shrug is the dressy option. It covers the arms and shoulders of a gown without hiding the bodice.
Before buying a dress to wear with a shell, check the armholes. One cut in toward the neck shows the side of the shell; a straight armhole hides it.

Need shells? The Shell Station, from our maternity guide, stocks Pea Bee & Jae and Outline, most of it under $30.

How we counted

Every dress in the index is tagged from its own product photos. Tags miss things: when we checked a sample by eye, about one in six had a problem the tags didn't catch, usually a hem that stops right at the knee. So treat 4,211 as a ceiling and look at the photos before you buy. Counted 23 September 2026.

Common questions

What is a shell?

A thin, fitted top with sleeves and a high neckline, worn under a dress. Most are stretch cotton or jersey and cost $15 to $30.

Can I wear a shell under a sleeveless dress?

Yes. It looks cleanest when the dress already has a high or straight neckline, so the shell only adds sleeves. Pick one in the same color as the dress.

Is a cardigan or a bolero better than a shell?

It depends on the dress. A shell looks cleanest under a high-neck sleeveless dress. A cardigan suits casual dresses and cooler weather. A bolero or shrug is the dressy option, for gowns and weddings.

About refynd

Refynd is a free search engine for modest dresses. It indexes about 85,000 in-stock dresses from roughly 100 online stores and tags each one from its own product photos for sleeve length, neckline, hem and coverage, so you can filter every store at once for your own standard. Refynd sells nothing itself; every listing links to the retailer. How it works.
